Remembering When I Was “Stuck” by Terrence McKinley Moor

I hope you are having a Happy Labor Day and taking time out to be with family and friends. One of the ways to get unstuck is definitely taking time out for self-care, and the holidays are a great way to do that.

I was reading the Introduction to my book, How to Quit Quitting and Grow Through Any Struggle with 3 Effective Steps, and I had to share the following passage with you. I am always speaking about how to get off the “hamster wheel” of life, and the following passage reveals my “stuck period/silent struggle:”

This book was inspired by the more than 20 years that I have struggled with being stuck and unable to move forward in life. I was not intentionally doing nothing; I was constantly keeping myself busy, but, in reality, I was only spinning my wheels.

I am now at the golden age of my life and I have finally learned how to move forward in life. After years of being busy, going through the motions and looking like I’m making moves, I realize that life for me has been nothing more than a hamster on the wheel movement.

During my “hamster on the wheel” period, I managed to remain self-employed, starting and managing over a dozen types of businesses. At the time of this publication, I have been in a successful marriage for over 30 years; purchased my first home at the age of 26; became a published author; a community leader, productive citizen and role model. From outside appearances, I have always been successful and on my way to greatness. However, I secretly knew that I was barely scratching the surface because I was battling with an inner struggle.

Despite all of my accolades, I was silently fighting a daily struggle with bouts of reoccurring nightmares, irritability, anger, stress, depression, lack of concentration, indecisiveness and anxiety. This silent struggle is called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)...

Just that “silent struggle” phrase bothers me. Why is it when we face the most difficult periods of our lives that we believe we should struggle alone? Why is it so natural for some of us, (I dare to say most of us), to hold our heads down in shame? Why do we feel like we are the only ones going through what we are going through, and need to just “figure it out” ourselves?

I can confidently say this, “You will NEVER figure it out by yourself, nor will you fix anything by yourself.” Looking back, I wish I realized that much sooner. It definitely would have made things better in my personal and professional life.

Then there is another way I look at that. Perhaps the reason I struggled in my journey was so that you do not have to. Reliving these moments is the occasional fuel I need to continue my mission to help you get “unstuck” and live the life you desire. Your desires and visions are what is natural. Normalizing pain, suffering, and silent struggles are not.
